While out and about, Kimmi met a potbelly pig being walked on a leash.
It was one of those unexpected moments that sticks with you. We had no idea that the pig who would eventually become our first pig, Midge, was being born that very same day. Looking back, it feels like the beginning of a story that was always meant to happen.
Midge opened the door to a world we knew nothing about. Through her, we discovered that pigs are intelligent, emotional, hilarious, stubborn, loving, and endlessly fascinating. We also learned about the growing number of pigs in need of rescue and sanctuary.
Our second pig, Imogene, helped shape our mission further.
She came from an accidental litter where tragedy struck shortly after birth. The runt of the litter, she was believed to have died shortly after birth. When she suddenly let out a scream while being handled, she was accidentally dropped, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. She was also born deaf and with extra toes. Against all odds, Imogene survived.
Today, she continues to thrive and reminds us every day that every pig deserves a chance, regardless of their challenges. Her resilience became one of the cornerstones of our philosophy: every life has value, and every pig deserves to be loved for exactly who they are.
Our first official boots-on-the-ground rescue came during a winter storm near Walnut Canyon National Monument. A dumped pig was struggling to survive as severe weather moved in. After a challenging Valentine's Day capture, he finally made it to safety. We named him Archibald—Archie for short—and every year we celebrate “Valen-Swines Day” in his honor. Archie wasn't just our first rescue—he was the pig who helped define our mission and showed us exactly why sanctuaries like this are needed.
Since 2020, we’ve continued opening our home and property to pigs in need. What began as a personal passion officially became Flying Pig Farm Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization at the end of 2024.
Today, most of the pigs who arrive here have been abandoned, dumped, surrendered, or found wandering as strays. Many have never known stability, safety, or kindness. At our sanctuary, every pig becomes family.
Our 20-acre property includes two acres dedicated entirely to our pigs, with room to grow as the sanctuary grows. Some pigs choose to sleep under the stars, while others prefer the comforts of home. Three of our residents have permanently claimed indoor sleeping privileges and have absolutely no intention of giving them up.
In November 2025, one of our rescued mothers welcomed a litter of piglets into the world shortly after arriving at the sanctuary. Those piglets will spend their entire lives here, safe and loved, exactly as every pig deserves.
At Flying Pig Farm Sanctuary, our mission is simple: to give pigs the happy, healthy, and kind lives they deserve while helping people see them for who they truly are.
People often compare pigs to dogs, but we’ve found they’re more like toddlers who haven’t learned words yet. They’re incredibly intelligent, deeply empathetic, emotionally complex, and wonderfully expressive. Every pig has a distinct personality, and once they feel safe, they aren’t shy about showing affection, opinions, gratitude, or the occasional dramatic protest.
Through rescue, sanctuary, and education, we hope to help more people see pigs not as livestock or food animals, but as the remarkable individuals they are.
The name Flying Pig Farm Sanctuary comes from the idea that sometimes the impossible happens. A dumped pig finds a family. A neglected pig learns to trust again. A special-needs pig thrives. A stray survives a storm. Truly, a pig learns to fly.
Every day, we get to watch pigs do what many people once thought was impossible: live the lives they were always meant to have.
Thank you for being part of our story and helping us make that possible.
